Good Practice for Freight Transportation

As freight sent via LTL carriers may be handled several times over the course of transit, there is always the opportunity for the misrouting or misloading of freight to take place.

It is considered good practice have the tracking number visible on every side of each item of freight. The easier it is for dockworkers to identify an individual shipment, the less likely it is to be put in the wrong place. Even though it is not required, it is a good idea to affix a label including four letter Carrier Code, Tracking Number, Destination, and post code of the shipment. If the Destination and post code are affixed to each side, misloading is far less likely to occur. If the only piece of identification for your freight is the tracking number the dockworker will have a difficult time identifying shipments, increasing the chances of freight being separated and loaded onto the wrong vehicle.

Proper labels, bar codes, and RFID are important for proper routing and delivery, however, you do not want to advertise the value or type of contents on the package as this may encourage theft.
