Packaging your freight for transportation

Over the course of transportation, freight sent via LTL carriers may be handled several times, and often by multiple carriers.

Freight must be properly packaged to protect it from scuffing, vibration, humidity, condensation and any handling damage that may be incurred over the course of transit. Freight that is not securely packaged poses a risk of causing damage to other freight.

Carriers have published tariffs that offer guidance on packaging to ensure that your freight is packaged correctly to meet the specific needs of the logistics system and the product being transported. Within the freight transportation industry it is considered good practice to load freight onto pallets or package freight into crates.

Following the recommended guidance for packaging your freight for transportation will help to avoid loss situations, where freight is separated and lost. Proper packaging will also help to reduce the opportunity for freight theft.
